The system for back projection in the studio consists of a projector which is situated at one end of the studio, a large translucent screen about half-way down and a camera on the other side of the screen. The background image is put on the projector back to front so that when it is projected on the screen it becomes the right way round. Therefore from the camera side you can see the image as photographed, through the translucent screen. The camera is then set up on to the screen with the car, airplane, boat or whatever vehicle or set you're using in the foreground - the set is placed in front and the actors in position. It is the job then of the lighting cameraman to light the set so that it balances with the screen at the back, in other words the sun direction is right, and the exposure and the whole texture of the scene balances and fits the original picture.
