An extreme wide-angle lens whose glass element resembles a fish eye. Fish-eye lenses commonly serve as special effect lens because of their ability to distort objects at close proximity to the camera and to greatly expand the sense of space in longer views. Context: Extreme wide-angle lenses bend corners and give almost funhouse-mirror distortion to objects or people being filmed. They are rarely used for portraiture because they balloon people's faces and make them look heavy or freakish. The closer the lens is to the subject, the more pronounced the effect. The most familiar distorting lens is called a fish-eye, which sees almost a full 180 degrees in front of the camera. Its effects are so extreme that it is not used frequently.
