In general, the effectiveness of an effects shot depends on the care with which it is executed and the context into which it is edited. Just as a film can be salted with lip-sync shots and appear to be completely lip-sync, a film like Devil Doll or King Kong can interweave normal production shots, production effects shots, and laboratory matte shots, yielding the impression that the scale effects are continuous. Having seen the actress climb onto a gigantic prop, the viewer will carry over some of that impression of realism when watching the actress being held aloft by the mad doctor in a traveling matte shot; the matte shot will seem less "faked", and both will give the impression of having really happened, which is what "realism" means in this context.
