Context: Zooming in or out while panning is a favourite device of camera operators, as the effect of the zoom is disguised by the pan, and may well go completely unnoticed (this is more true of using a pan to disguise a zoom out than it is to use a pan to disguise a zoom in). Some drama directors and camera operators would never consider zooming in or out to cover the action of the scene, but nevertheless in the hands of an experienced operator this technique can be successful: again the zoom is best disguised as the camera pans (or tracks) with the action.
